Copying a project to another computer

Can you detail what files and folders need to be copied to effectively transfer a Mycosm Studio project from one PC to another please?

  • This is a good question - and critical to workflow...

NOTE – Any environment should only be opened by one person at any one time.

In short, you only need the relevant .studio file and any library folders containing assets from your environment. It does not matter where you have the .studio file stored, it can be on another drive on the network – so long as the PC you are working on can read that drive, it can open the environment.

The real key is in the handling of the asset libraries… and this is where a clear and consistent set of practices and naming conventions is required amongst those working together on an environment.

By default the Mycosm libraries are stored within Documents/Mycosm/Mycosm Studio/ of the user profile that installs Mycosm. If the user creates new asset libraries – which can be stored elsewhere on the PC if desired – the corresponding asset library folders will need to be copied across to any other machine on which the environment must run. Once copied, other users must add the same asset library in Mycosm Studio, ensuring the library name is exactly the same as the original user specified.

Lastly, if any assets have been added to the default Mycosm asset libraries, the individual assets will also need to be added to the other user’s Mycosm libraries. This must be to the library of the same name as per the original Mycosm user. All of these steps need to be carried prior to opening Mycosm and accessing the environment, as Mycosm updates all the relevant index files each time it is launched.

For example, I have created an environment including the following:
    - a standard terrain,
    - the model “bell206.3DS” (from the Sample Models library),
    - a road model “Roads.FBX” that was added by me to the Mycosm “Sample Models” library,
    - a building model from a library I created called “Buildings” , and
    - saved the environment as “Demonstrate”

For someone else to be able to work on this environment, they need to do the following:
    - copy the file “Demonstrate.studio” to an accessible location
    - copy the asset library “Buildings” to their PC
    - open Mycosm and add the library “Buildings” (ensuring the name is exactly the same)
    - drag the “Roads.FBX” model from its location into the “Sample Models” asset library
    - open the “Demonstrate” environment in Mycosm

Hopefully this is helpful to you. Don’t hesitate to ask further questions if this is unclear or you encounter issues with this.
